Coatings and Surface Treatments for Space ApplicationsSpace mission success relies on maintenance of the optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of materials to stay within set parameters during the life of the mission. During the mission, spacecraft components and instruments are exposed to a variety of natural and man-made environments which can greatly change material properties affecting their performance. This presentation will focus on some of the types of environments encountered; their effect on materials; and coatings and surface treatments that were developed to enable the materials to remain durable. Surface texturing of metal surfaces to enhance radiation of heat will also be discussed.
