On the Making of IXPEThe joint NASA and ASI mission, a Small NASA Explorer, named the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) was launched aboard a Falcon 9 and successfully put into an equatorial low-earth orbit on December 9, 2021. The mission has been an outstanding success, programmatically and scientifically as this conference demonstrates. We present a brief, but detailed overview of what IXPE is and how it works. We also review the background of the development of IXPE and explain how a fifty-year goal of wanting to add imaging X-ray polarimetry to our arsenal of tools was finally accomplished.
