NASA Transonic Truss-Braced Wing StudiesNASA aeronautics research on the transonic truss-braced wing (TTBW) concept started in the 1970s. A substantial amount of research has occurred over the last 10–15 years through the Subsonic Ultra-Green Aircraft Research (SUGAR) and related NASA studies. The SUGAR studies included the conceptual design and development of the TTBW configuration as well as wind tunnel testing to reduce the development and performance risk for a future production aircraft. NASA internal studies and technology development have also contributed to maturation and risk reduction of this concept. This paper presents NASA-sponsored TTBW research that is leading to revolutionary improvements in subsonic transport aircraft, which contribute toward achieving the US Aviation Climate Action Plan goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions while remaining commercially viable. The focus of this paper is to provide an overview of the NASA-funded and NASA-led TTBW research within the context of the integrated TTBW vehicle design and analysis.
