Lightweight Portable Life Support System (PLSS) Final ReportThe Kit for Off-World Astronaut Life Aid (KOALA) is an innovative Portable Life Support System (PLSS) developed for the NASA X-Hab program. NASA looks to send a manned mission to Mars, existing PLSS designs are too heavy to be supported by humans in Martian gravity. KOALA addresses this challenge with a target dry system mass under 60 kg, while providing the necessary life support functions.

The X-Hab program aims to connect NASA research with Universities, outsourcing technological development to get innovative ideas in the Aerospace Field. This opportunity allowed the KOALA team to learn from PLSS experts to better develop ideas that can hopefully be implemented in future NASA missions.
