Design of Structurally Efficient Tapered StrutsThis report describes the analytical study of two full-scale tapered composite struts. The analytical study resulted in the design of two structurally efficient carbon/epoxy struts in accordance with NASA-specified geometries and loading conditions. Detailed stress analysis was performed of the insert, end fitting, and strut body to obtain an optimized weight with positive margins. Two demonstration struts were fabricated based on a well-established design from a previous Space Shuttle strut development program.
